Squarespace Launches its New Video Studio App
I’m just off a Squarespace Circle webinar where the brilliant folks at Squarespace walked us through their latest product launch - the Video Studio app. This new app, available for now only in the Apple App Store, allows you to design beautiful, short videos with assets, images, products etc directly from your website, or from your phone. You can add voiceover text and music and the templates in the app give you some great ideas for video layout and design.
One of the great things about the app is that it can automatically resize your videos into different formats, for different social media platforms. Once you have created the video in the app, you download it to your phone and then upload it to the social media platform of your choice. If you wish to add it to your website, you can upload the video to Vimeo or YouTube and add it to your site with the video block, as usual.
You can use the videos as a page background, within a blog or anywhere on your site or on social media. They are editable within the app and currently all sites are supported. So if your site is on 7.0 your site will be picked up by the app when you log into it with your usual Squarespace credentials.
Some of questions from the webinar were:
1 Can you import your own music to play on the video?
Yes, as long as you have the rights to the music. Just because you have a pop song downloaded on your phone doesn’t mean you have the rights to use it.
2 How many different voiceover options are there and are they all with an American accent?
There are about ten different voiceovers you can use and they are all broadly “mid-Atlantic” (my term!) or North American.
3 Does the app support other languages?
Not yet.
4 Is there a desktop version?
Not yet.
5 Can I record my own voice?
Yes.
6 Can I upload images from my phone or take a live photo/video?
Yes, you can upload images or video footage from your phone or the app can take images from your website.
7 Can I autofill product descriptions into the video directly from my website?
Yes.
8 Can you give some examples of when I might use one of these videos on my site?
To announce a new product, an event or any update to your services, for example.
How to use Squarespace Video Studio
Download and start using Squarespace Video Studio
You can download Squarespace Video Studio on any Apple device from the App Store. After you successfully downloaded the app:
Open Video Studio, then tap the arrow icon in the bottom-right corner.
Log into your Squarespace account. If you signed up for Squarespace with an email address and password, enter them and tap Log In. If you signed up using a social account, tap that account and follow the prompts.
If you have more than one website associated with your Squarespace account, choose the website you'd like to create video content for.
Video Studio then gathers brand and product information from the selected site and populates the brand setup screen with the site name and a colour palette. Select a dark color, light color, and font to match your website design. These choices apply to any project you make using Autofill brand styles.
Now you’re ready to start creating your first video using Video Studio.
