Ideal Client vs Niche vs Target Audience (What’s the Difference?)

These three terms are often used interchangeably. But they’re not the same, and understanding the difference makes your marketing significantly easier.

Target Audience

Your target audience is the broad group your business speaks to.

For example:

  • Coaches

  • Small business owners

  • Consultants

It’s a starting point, but it’s wide.

Niche

Your niche narrows that group down.

It defines the specific segment you’re best placed to serve.

For example:

  • Women leaving corporate to start a business

  • Established coaches moving into group programmes

Now it’s more focused—and more useful.

Ideal Client

Your ideal client is the clearest version of that niche.

It’s based on real people you’ve worked with (or want more of).

You understand:

  • Where they are now

  • What they’re struggling with

  • What they’re trying to achieve

And example of this was a client who initially described her audience as “mid-life professional women”.

But when we looked at her actual work, - she is a personal trainer - a pattern emerged. The clients she got the best results for were indeed professional women, but they were all single, without children. Once we defined that more clearly, her messaging became much sharper overnight. Instead of trying to appeal broadly, she started speaking directly to that particular demographic and is now known in that community.

Why this matters

If you only define your audience at a high level, your messaging stays broad.

When you move from audience → niche → ideal client, everything sharpens:

  • Your content

  • Your offers

  • Your conversions

If you’re unsure where you currently sit, the Brand Authority Score™ will highlight that very quickly.
