Kajabi Community Platform vs. Facebook Groups: A Comparative Analysis

In the world of online communities, two platforms stand out for creators and entrepreneurs looking to build and manage their tribes: Kajabi's Community Platform and Facebook Groups.

Each offers unique features and benefits, catering to different needs and objectives. This article provides a detailed comparison to help you decide which platform might be the best fit for your community-building efforts.

Kajabi Community Platform: A Closer Look

Chances are if you are reading this, that you are already using Kajabi or are considering it. Known for its comprehensive suite of tools designed for online course creators, Kajabi offers a Community Platform that integrates seamlessly with its other services. This integration allows for a streamlined experience not only for you, the creator but also for the members of your community. As you know, the platform is designed to keep everything under one roof - from courses to memberships and community discussions.

Pros:

  • Integration with Kajabi Products: The Community area seamlessly connects with your courses, memberships, and email marketing campaigns.

  • Exclusive Environment: Provides a distraction-free space dedicated solely to your content and community.

  • Customisation: Offers the ability to customise the look and feel of your community to match your brand.

  • Monetisation: Easily monetise your community without the need for third-party tools.

Cons:

  • Cost: Access to the Community Platform comes as part of Kajabi’s pricing plans, which might be higher than some alternatives.

  • Learning Curve: New users may need time to familiarise themselves with the platform’s extensive features.

Let's delve deeper into Kajabi's Community Platform, focusing on its innovative features like Circles, Challenges, and Meetups, which can significantly enhance the community experience for both creators and members.

Enhanced Features of Kajabi's Community Platform

Circles: Building Sub-Communities

One of the standout features of Kajabi's Community Platform is the ability to create Circles. Circles are essentially sub-communities within your main community, allowing for more focused discussions and interactions. This feature is particularly beneficial for creators with diverse offerings or large communities that cover a broad range of topics.

Benefits of Circles:

  • Targeted Engagement: Members can join Circles that align with their specific interests, leading to more meaningful interactions.

  • Organized Content: Helps in keeping the community well-organised, making it easier for members to navigate and find relevant discussions.

  • Increased Participation: By providing a space for niche topics, Circles encourage participation from members who might feel overwhelmed in larger group settings.

Challenges: Encouraging Active Participation

Challenges are a dynamic way to engage your community members and encourage them to take action. Whether it's a 30-day fitness challenge, a 7-day writing workshop, or a productivity sprint, Challenges can be tailored to any theme relevant to your community. They are an excellent tool for fostering a sense of accomplishment and camaraderie among members, but they do take work on your part!

Benefits of Challenges:

  • Boost Engagement: Challenges keep members engaged with regular tasks and updates, maintaining interest and activity within the community.

  • Goal Achievement: Helps members achieve personal or group goals, enhancing the value they get from the community.

  • Content Variety: Offers a break from the usual discussion formats, introducing fun and interactive content.

I use Challenges as a place for my Brand Accelerator programme participants to upload their homework in the early weeks of the programme. Given that students can't upload documents themselves directly to the Course interface in Kajabi, I create Challenges in the Community and they can upload their work there. I can then give them direct feedback on their Challenge and the work they have submitted, creating an ongoing conversation in real time in the Community.

Meetups: Facilitating Real-World Connections

While online interactions are valuable, the power of face-to-face connections cannot be understated. Kajabi's Community Platform supports the organisation of Meetups, allowing members to gather in real life. These can range from casual coffee meetups to more structured workshops or seminars.

Benefits of Meetups:

  • Strengthen Bonds: Personal interactions help strengthen the bonds between community members, fostering a stronger sense of belonging.

  • Enhanced Learning: In-person workshops or seminars can provide deeper learning experiences, with the opportunity for hands-on activities and immediate feedback.

  • Brand Loyalty: Meetups can increase members' loyalty to your brand, as they feel more personally connected to the community and its leaders.

Incorporating features like Circles, Challenges, and Meetups into your Kajabi Community can significantly enrich the member experience. These tools not only increase engagement and participation but also help in building a more cohesive and active community. By leveraging these features, you can offer a diverse range of interactions that cater to the varied interests and needs of your members.

Facebook Groups: A Familiar Choice

Facebook Groups, on the other hand, have long been a popular choice for building online communities, thanks to their ease of use and the vast user base of Facebook. They offer a convenient way to gather like-minded individuals, share content, and facilitate discussions. But a lot of people hate Facebook!

Pros:

  • Widespread Adoption: With billions of active users, Facebook does make it easy to attract members to your group.

  • Cost: Creating and managing a Facebook Group is free.

  • Ease of Use: Many users are already familiar with navigating Facebook Groups.

Cons:

  • Distractions: Ads and other content on Facebook can distract members from your group.

  • Limited Customisation: There are fewer options to customize the look and feel of your group to match your brand.

  • Privacy Concerns: Some users are wary of privacy on Facebook, which might deter them from joining your group.

So which platform is right for your Community?

When deciding between Kajabi's Community Platform and Facebook Groups, consider your specific needs and the preferences of your target audience. If you're looking for a branded, integrated community experience and are willing to invest in it, Kajabi's platform could be the right choice. On the other hand, if you're starting out or have a limited budget, the familiarity and free access of Facebook Groups might serve your needs better.
